A 51-year-old Dublin father who raped and sexually assaulted his daughter for a period of two years has been jailed for nine years by Mr Justice O'Sullivan at the Central Criminal Court.

The victim, now 21, told the jury that her father had sexual intercourse with her almost daily between 1985 and 1987.

She said the assaults happened when she came home from school and took place in her parents' bedroom, the kitchen and their sitting room while her mother was out working.

The crimes happened on a west Dublin estate.

The jury returned guilty verdicts on each of the seven charges before it on the seventh day of the trial last July.

It had deliberated for a total of some six hours and spent one night in a hotel.

The accused man was found guilty by unanimous verdicts of one charge of raping his daughter, two charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of her when she was under the age of 15, and three charges of indecent assault arising out of oral sexual acts.

The jury also found him guilty by a 10-1 majority of a further indecent assault. All the offences occurred on dates between September 1st, 1985, and September 21st, 1987.

Mr Justice O'Sullivan criticised the long delay in bringing the case before the court.

He imposed nine-year sentences on the rape and incest charges and four years each on the indecent assault charges. All the sentences are to run concurrently.

The victim told Mr Patrick Gageby SC, prosecuting, her father once told her she would be a heart-breaker when she grew up and she took this to mean she would be pretty.

She said her father would get her to take off her school uniform and have sex with her. After each session he would give her 30p to go to the shops and often warned her not to tell anyone or she would be taken away. She believed this.

Her father had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"I didn't do it. I am not guilty. I didn't commit these offences," he told the jury in evidence.
