A man was in custody last night following a fatal stabbing incident close to a hostel for asylum-seekers in Waterford city centre.
The stabbing occurred in Manor Street at about 8 p.m., and a man was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where he was found on arrival to be dead.
A foreign national was arrested soon after the incident and was being questioned at Waterford Garda station. Attempts to establish the identity and nationality of the victim were continuing last night.
Insp Tom Duggan said there appeared to have been an altercation in the street, but gardai were still attempting to establish the facts.
Gardai arrived on the scene within minutes of the incident and attempted to resuscitate the man. A nurse who attended the victim said he suffered a particularly serious stab wound to his chest.
She said that after she arrived on the scene a man who was with the injured man, and seemed to know him, said he had been stabbed.
She said the victim, who had black hair and a moustache and was wearing a navy tracksuit, appeared to be aged between the late 30s and late 40s.
The man was initially reported to be a foreign national but gardai said last night it was possible he was Irish.
