A man was fined £250 yesterday and sentenced to four months imprisonment, three of them suspended, for attempting to push a garda into the Liffey. Joseph Nolan (28), of St Peter's Drive, Greenhills, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty to obstructing a garda at Aston Quay on June 16th, 1996.

Dublin District Court heard that Nolan was arrested for a drunk driving offence on Dame Street earlier that night. When released, he became aggressive and abusive towards Garda Paul Dolan outside Pearse Street Garda station. Garda Dolan saw Nolan get into a taxi on Aston Quay. When he approached the car Nolan jumped out and pushed him on to the river wall.
