A man was arrested in Belfast tonight after being shot with a Taser stun gun by police during an attempted robbery.

It was just the second time a Taser had been used by a PSNI firearms officer since it was added to their weaponry earlier this year.

The man shot did not require hospital treatment, however in line with procedure the Police Ombudsman was notified to investigate.

The PSNI said a 28-year-old man was being questioned about the attempted armed robbery of a cash-in-transit van at a shopping centre in the Donegall Road during which a security guard was threatened with a knife.

In August, a Taser was used for the first time in the province to subdue a father who had locked himself in a house with his children. He was later charged with making threats to kill .

In Northern Ireland the weapon is only issued to specialist firearms officers for use as lesser force than a firearm.
