Man sought over Dublin shooting

Gardai are seeking a man who shot and injured a 19-year-old at his home in Sandyford, south Dublin, last night. They are also looking for the driver of a Mercedes in which he escaped.

The gunman called at the victim's house in Moreen Lawn, Sandyford, shortly after 9 p.m., firing with a shotgun when the man opened the door. The victim's family raised the alarm and he was taken by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital. He suffered superficial injuries to his legs.

Garda sources last night seemed to rule out republican or drug-related criminals, saying they were baffled over the motives behind the incident. The attacker may have been planning to kill the victim and botched the attempt, the sources said.

Descriptions of the suspects are hazy. They spoke with strong Dublin accents. Dundrum gardai have appealed for witnesses.
