Johannesburg - The President of South Africa, Mr Thabo Mbeki, began talks with the presidents of Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania yesterday afternoon in a fresh effort to end the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
"The talks have just started. They are about peace in the Congo," presidential spokesman Mr Ronnie Mamoepa said. A foreign affairs spokesman said the talks were being held at Mr Mbeki's official residence in Pretoria. The Rwandan President, Mr Pasteur Bizimingu; the Ugandan President, Mr Yoweri Museveni, and the Tanzanian President, Mr Benjamin Mkapa, arrived in South Africa earlier yesterday, the spokesman said.
