Addressing the second European Cohesion Forum in Brussels this morning, Mr McCreevy said that Ireland's experience as an EU member had been a positive one which had allowed Ireland achieve a level of economic development undreamed of 3o years ago.
Apart from direct transfers under the EU Cohesion and Common Agricultural Policies, Mr McCreevy said, Ireland as a small open economy has greatly benefitted from access to the Union's single market.
"This market will be greatly expanded as a result of Enlargement with major benefits for the European economy as a whole," Mr McCreevy added.
"It is from this positive viewpoint that the prospect of Enlargement must be viewed."
