The next government must ensure Ireland spends its share of reduced EU structural funds on those who most need it, the Dublin MEP Ms Bernie Malone told the conference.

Central and eastern European access to the EU early in the next century will mean less of a handout for Ireland than it has had in the past 20 years.

"The unemployment black spots must come before golf clubs and marinas," she said.
