IRELAND:The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has restated his support for a broad debate on energy supply that would include discussions on the nuclear power issue. A public discussion of energy security and supply was necessary so options and alternatives could be opened to debate.
Eamon Ryan made his comments in Dublin yesterday during a visit to the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the RDS.
"I am confident in this debate. It connects us to what the realities and the real solutions are," he said. "Climate change and energy security requires us to take a really broad and deep analysis of everything we are doing," he said.
"The debate on nuclear is part of a wider debate on where we are going to get our energy from in the future."
He suggested that the Dáil Joint Committee on Climate Change and Energy Security would be the best location for a debate on the issue.
"It is up to the committee to decide on their own work programme and their own agenda. I certainly think it is the right location, it is on the record and also allows all sides to make presentations."
