Human remains have been found on Saddleworth Moor near Manchester.
However, police have ruled out the possibility the remains are of one of the victims of the Moors Murderers Ian Brady and his girlfriend Myra Hindley, who killed five children in the 1960s.
West Yorkshire police said they were called around 1pm to reports of remains found at Wessenden Head Road on Saddleworth Moor, near Huddersfield.
A spokesman said it was not clear whether the remains were human, adding: "Inquiries are on-going."
Keith Bennett, who was murdered by Brady and Hindley, is believed to have been buried on the Moor. Despite several police searches of the Moor, however, no trace of the 12-year-old's remains have been uncovered.
Brady and Hindley began their killing spree on July 12th, 1963. They were both jailed for life in 1966. Hindley died in jail in November 2002.
The bodies of their four other child victims have been found, but Brady maintains he has been unable to find the patch of scrubland where Keith was buried.
Greater Manchester officers have been actively searching for his body for the last three years.
David Kirwan, the solicitor acting for Keith's mother Winnie Johnson, said this afternoon police had not been in touch about any discovery.
