CAIRO - The Egyptian capital was the venue yesterday for a series of hastily arranged meetings between the President, Mr Hosni Mubarak, and Arab leaders as they tried to find a way of salvaging the Middle East peace process, writes Siona Jenkins.

The Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr Rafik Al Hariri, and the Syrian Foreign Minister, Mr Farouq Al Shara, had separate meetings with the Egyptian President in the morning, while the Palestinian President, Mr Yasser Arafat, was to arrive in the early evening.

The burst of activity reflects the Arab world's growing fear that the peace process is in real, danger of unravelling after the series of crises that began with the Israeli government's decision to build, a settlement in Arab East Jerusalem.

"Don't underestimate Arab, intelligence and don't play games with us," warned the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr Amr Moussa, during a joint news conference with his Syrian counterpart.
