London - The right of the Home Secretary to prevent prison inmates founding families from their cells - thus creating "single-parent" families - was emphatically upheld yesterday by the Court of Appeal.

Three senior judges rejected an attempt by jailed murderer Gavin Mellor (29) for the legal right to father a child while in prison by donating sperm so that his wife could become pregnant.
