The British government announced last night that it would not oppose moves towards setting up a new all-party House of Lords inquiry into the 1994 RAF Chinook helicopter crash on the Mull of Kintyre in which 29 members of the security forces died.

The former Labour minister, Lord Chalfont, called for a fresh look at the evidence. The Defence Minister, Baroness Symons, told him that the government would not ask its supporters in the Lords to vote against his motion.
