New head for Law Reform Commission

The Government has appointed Mr Justice Vivian Lavan as the new chairman of the Law Reform Commission

The Government has appointed Mr Justice Vivian Lavan as the new chairman of the Law Reform Commission. He replaces Mr Justice Anthony Hederman who retired at the end of June.

Mr Justice Lavan, who will take up the post on July 27th, is one of the senior judges of the High Court and has a long association with the US legal system.

A graduate of UCD's law school and the King's Inns, he was called to the Bar in July 1969, to the English Bar in 1975, and to the Inner Bar in October, 1982.

He was appointed a judge of the High Court in 1989. He is a bencher of the King's Inns and a member of the judicial division of the American Bar Association.

Mr Justice Lavan was appointed Irish delegate to the European Association of Judges and to the International Association of Judges in 1996.

He is married to Dr Una Lavan and has two sons and two daughters.
