An explosion at a Shell petrol station in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi today has killed one person and injured at least eight.

Policeman Munir Sheikh said a bomb blast brought down a building in the station.

However, deputy inspector-general of Karachi police Tariq Jamil said they were still investigating the cause of the blast and whether it was a bomb.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and its commercial centre, and has suffered a string of bombings. Attacks have been blamed on terrorists or linked to business disputes.
