The two main opposition parties today attacked the Government on the first anniversary of its return to office with Labour claiming the FF/PD coalition was the worst government Ireland has ever had.

Publishing a 40-page document outlining what it says is a litany of election lies and empty promises, the Labour Party claimed the Government was the worst the State has ever had, adding that the prospect that it will govern for four more years is "unthinkable".

Fine Gael Leader, Mr Enda Kenny said the Government has unleashed "an economic havoc on society with its fiscal wantonness".

"Since buying their way back to power with the people's own money, they have scourged the country with a series of random and ill-thought out cutbacks," he said.

"The truth is, though, that this Government and Responsibility are complete strangers".

Labour Party leader Mr Pat Rabbitte said: "In its first year in office, the Government has broken dozens of promises, attempted to distort its record, launched a series of savage attacks on essential spending".

He said the Government has "expected the most vulnerable people in our society to bear the cost of their incompetent economic management.

"The thought that Ireland has to endure four more years of this incompetent, hypocritical and dishonest Government is unthinkable," he said.

Mr Rabbitte's party marked the first anniversary of the Government's return to power by publishing two documents.

One was a leaflet detailing a cutback or broken promise for every week it had been in power. The second was an analysis of what it called the Government's "election lies".
