A consignment in a Securicor van involved in a hold-up in Co Wicklow last May, during which a man was shot dead, was valued at more than £250,000, a garda told a High Court bail hearing yesterday.

Mr Justice O'Donovan refused bail to Mr Danny McAllister (43), of Cromlech Fields, Ballybrack, Co Dublin, and Mr Pascal Burke (34), of Marrowbone Lane, Dublin.

Both men, married with families, are charged with having a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a pump-action shotgun and a revolver with intent to endanger life at Cullenmore, Ashford, on May 1st. They are also charged with having guns with intent to commit a robbery on the same date.

Refusing bail, Mr Justice O'Donovan said the evidence of a Garda inspector had been that, if bail were granted, it was believed the applicants would not turn up for trial.

He said he had to have regard for the views of the inspector and in the circumstances would refuse bail.

Det Insp John O'Mahony told the court that both men had been remanded by the Special Criminal Court, where a bail application had been unsuccessful.

A bail application by Mr Saoirse Breatnach (19), of Cypress Court, Ballybrack, Co Dublin, who is facing similar charges, was adjourned until Monday.
