The Progressive Democrats are to demand examination of the costs of Sports Campus Ireland by an independent third party outside Government.
A party spokesman said yesterday the aim was to have an "objective assessment" of the costings because so many figures were being bandied about, including the actual cost of relocating the State laboratories at Abbotstown.
The review was designed to get "one independent entity to adjudicate on this". It had not been decided who would carry out the assessment or when it would be completed, he said.
Following last week's controversy over the £60 million allocation to the GAA by the Taoiseach, the spokesman said, they had made this demand because the party was concerned that the project's costs seemed to be "spiralling upwards unchecked".
Mr Ahern told the Dail last week that an external review would take account of "the cost implications and the ancillary costs such as access infrastructure and the strategies to manage the ongoing operating costs".
The PD Minister of State, Mr Robert Molloy, has raised further doubts about the costs, which are expected to reach over £1 billion.
"I am very concerned about where it is going in relation to costs and the choices that are being made. We have a need for improved hospital services; a need for major infrastructure developments to sustain the growth of the economy; and we have a need for a network of sports facilities for the community," he said in an interview with the Irish Examiner.
He said the scale of the project kept on growing. "That started out as a football stadium. J.P. McManus was going to give £50 million and didn't want anything in return. That has now grown from the original of £150 to £200 million to nearly £1 billion.
"We can't keep going on and adding bits and pieces to it, particularly in a situation where we are very concerned about public expenditure this year."
The Minister for Tourism and Sport, Dr McDaid, is due to bring a memorandum to Cabinet in two weeks on the funding arrangements for the stadium.
