The Labour Party has promised that if it is in government after the next election, it will provide houses for all families on council waiting lists, implement a national homeless strategy, give new legal rights to private tenants and introduce consumer protection laws for all home buyers.

Mr Eamon Gilmore, the party's spokesman on the Environment, said Labour's message that in Government, it would establish a national housing authority to ensure the abolition of waiting lists.
