Police came under attack as they chased a stolen car in west Belfast yesterday.
The blue Volkswagen Polo pursued by officers rammed a taxi who tried to block it.
The car was stolen by two men in Sorella Street just before 1pm. The thieves then attempted to take another vehicle in nearby Townsend Street, causing minor damage.
At this stage the passing taxi driver spotted what was happening and tried to intervene, police said.
But the men headed towards the lower Divis area, ramming the cab as they went. The taxi sustained minor damage, and the driver was unhurt.
Police were now pursuing the car, and the thieves ran from the car when it stopped on Ross Road. One man was arrested.
As he was being held officers were attacked by a crowd of youths throwing stones and other missiles.
Damage was caused to some police vehicles, although no injuries were reported.
