New York - A New York police officer was sentenced to 30 years in prison yesterday for the torture and brutal beating of a Haitian immigrant, a crime that generated outrage in the US.
Justin Volpe (27), was jailed for sodomising Abner Louima with a stick and severely beating him in 1997. Volpe pleaded guilty earlier in the year to violating Mr Louima's civil rights by beating and committing sodomy, after damning testimony against him from four fellow police officers.
