London - The Catholic Church was criticised yesterday after rejecting compensation claims made by victims of a paedophile priest and suggesting he was twisted by his time in a Nazi prison camp.

In a letter which has appalled the victims of Father Eric Taylor, the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham states that "flaws in Society or the second World War" may have given rise to the priest's reign of abuse at an orphanage up to the early 1960s.
