London - Prison staff at Wormwood Scrubs returned to work yesterday evening following a dispute over the suspension of 25 colleagues for alleged violence against inmates. Officers accepted an offer from the governor, Mr Stephen Moore, aimed at improving their safety and preventing inmates making unfounded allegations, according to union leaders after an all-day meeting at the jail's chapel.

The 900 prisoners were locked in their cells and visits were cancelled because of the dispute.

Following Tuesday's announcement that officers were to be charged after allegations of beatings and mistreatment, the Prison Service said a wing at the scrubs would be closed early for refurbishment because of the staffing crisis.
