Rome - Italians voted yesterday in local elections seen as a key barometer of public confidence in the 18-month-old centre-left coalition of the Prime Minister, Mr Romano Prodi, and the future of Mr Silvio Berlusconi's Freedom Alliance opposition bloc.

The elections were for the councils of five provinces and the mayors of 421 councils, but turnout was reported to be sluggish.
