Bryan, Texas - A white supremacist, Lawrence Russell Brewer, was sentenced to death yesterday for the murder of a disabled black man.
After deliberating for 14 hours, the panel of 11 white jurors and one Hispanic decided on imposing the death penalty for Brewer (32), who was convicted last Monday for his role in the killing of James Byrd jnr in June 1998.
Brewer is the second three men facing execution by lethal injection for beating 49-year-old Mr Byrd, then chaining him to the back of a pick-up truck and dragging him more than 4.8 km in the town of Jasper, Texas.
