The jury in the trial of a musician charged with raping his former girlfriend is expected to retire later today to begin its deliberations. Yesterday the jury heard final speeches by counsel for both the prosecution and defence. Mr Justice Carney also began his closing address.

During the five-day trial at the Central Criminal Court, the 29-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty to rape, anal rape and assault of the 36-year-old alleged victim in the flat they shared in Dublin on August 24th-25th, 1996.
