Mexico City - Raul Salinas, the brother of a former Mexican president, was found guilty and sentenced to 50 years in prison yesterday in the 1994 murder of a senior politician.
Judge Ricardo Ojeda ruled that Salinas was "responsible" for the assassination of Francisco Ruiz Massieu, who was secretary-general of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI.) Salinas is a brother of the former president, Mr Carlos Salinas, who has a residence in Ireland. He has five days to apply for permission to appeal the sentence.
Raul Salinas has been held in a maximum security prison since he was arrested in February 1995.
