Port Louis - Mauritius schools were ordered closed yesterday and residents shopped for emergency supplies as cyclone Connie rumbled towards the Indian Ocean island.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services said the cyclone was 365km (225 miles) north of the island on Friday afternoon and, although it was not expected to make a direct hit, it would bring heavy rains and winds of more than 120kph (75 mph) today. Out in the Indian Ocean yesterday, the cyclone was producing winds of up to 225kph (140 mph) and gusts of up to 250kph (155 mph).
