A man who allegedly drove a stolen car at a police officer near west Belfast has been arrested for attempted murder, it emerged tonight.

He  was among seven people detained during a crackdown on car crime and domestic burglaries.

Police involved in the operation, centred on Lisburn and west Belfast, used stinger devices to halt the vehicles overnight. But one driver is believed to have deliberately swerved at an officer as he deployed the stinger.

He was held along with a passenger.

Police said they recovered a BMW car which had been stolen earlier during a burglary in the Carryduff area. In a separate incident officers stopped a Honda vehicle on the M1 Motorway at Blacks Road.

Three people in the vehicle were arrested for offences including burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and motoring offences. The car had earlier been stolen during a burglary in south Belfast.

Two other men were also arrested in separate incidents for dangerous driving, drink driving offences and  drug possession.
