Athens - Greece's socialist government faced a parliamentary vote of confidence following poor results in recent local elections and divisions within the ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) over ways to lead the country into Europe's single currency.

The Prime Minister, Mr Costas Simitis, and Pasok have a comfortable majority in the 300-seat parliament. Before last night's vote, Pasok deputies were warned that anyone voting against the government would be expelled from the party.
