Sinn Féin and the Progressive Unionist Party today began a united drive to end community conflict in Derry.

In a joint statement they said they had embarked on a sustained dialogue to develop initiatives for the future of community relations in the city.

The statement, issued by Sinn Féin councillor Lynn Fleming and Leslie Mitchell of the PUP, said they were in a society which was moving away from conflict and which shared a common humanity.

"Conflict has no place in our future - a shared future that is based upon equality for all people and a genuine process of reconciliation between differing traditions and cultural identities.

"A future where our common experience of poverty and sectarian division is ended," they said.
