Sterling struck a 26-year high against the dollar this morning to extend gains before an expected Bank of England interest rate rise this week.

The dollar suffered broadly on worries about security threats before the Independence Day holiday on Wednesday and the lingering problems in the US subprime mortgage market.

Sterling jumped as high as $2.0188 on the Reuters dealing system before slipping back to $2.0177, up slightly on the day.
