A strong earthquake jolted a remote region of China's northwest early this morning near its border with Tajikistan.
The 5.9-magnitude quake struck Akto county on the mountainous western edge of the Muslim region of Xinjiang at 7.16 a.m. local time. No deaths or injuries were reported.
According to reports, the epicentre was about 80 miles southwest of Kashgar, the nearest city, and 15 miles from the Tajik border, the report said.
The mountainous border region, near where China, Afghanistan and Tajikistan converge, suffers frequent powerful earthquakes.
