A Syrian man who had been helping local committees deliver aid in the war-stricken country has died in detention, according to Human Rights Watch.
The man, Omar Aziz (64), was a “peaceful activist”, said the New York-based organisation. He died on February 16th in Harasta military hospital, a relative told HRW. Another detainee, Ayham Ghazzoul (26), described as a human rights activist, died in detention in November while in the custody of military intelligence branch 215 in Kafr Suseh, in Damascus, a released detainee recently told his family.
The deaths highlight the need for unhindered access to all detainees, said HRW.
