Gardaí now estimate that cash and cheques totalling €800,000 were recovered during the Garda/PSNI searches including those on the farm of Thomas "Slab" Murphy last week.

The money is in the custody of the Criminal Assets Bureau but rough estimates are that there was between €300,000 and €320,000 in cash in both euro and sterling notes. In addition there were third party cheques, made out to various companies, that could total more than €500,000.

The money had been put into two large bags and concealed under bales of hay in a shed some distance from the former family home of Tom Murphy.

Informed sources say that it was in this shed, which recently changed hands, that they also found two laptop computers.

"The laptop and documents recovered make amazing reading. From the point of view of the Garda investigation, the information contained in them is simply marvellous. We have been taken aback at what we have seen and this is before there is an indepth analysis of the information," said a senior Garda source.
