Ulster Unionist leader Mr David Trimble will face criticism of his political strategy at two internal party meetings in the next 48 hours.

He will meet his 13 party officers in Belfast this afternoon. However, the more crucial meeting will be when he faces the UUP executive tomorrow morning.

Only four of the party officers are anti-agreement and they are not expected to seriously pressurise Mr Trimble at today's meeting.

"We will be on a listening brief," said one source. However, it is believed the UUP leader will come under closer scrutiny tomorrow.

Mr Trimble will outline his political strategy and his view of the possibility of progress on decommissioning.

He is expected to hear calls for sanctions against Sinn Fein.

Anti-agreement sources said they would most likely be pressing for a time-table which would commit the UUP to progressively withdrawing from government with Sinn Fein if there is no movement on the arms issue.

Talks between Irish and British government officials and the North's pro-agreement parties are to continue over the weekend, but sources on both sides said there was little chance of a deal before next week.

They rejected reports that policing was the only issue remaining to be resolved.

Sinn Fein has said Mr Trimble should be "talking tough" with internal party dissidents.
