ANKARA - The Islamist led coalition government of Mr Necmettin Erbekan lost its ruling majority in the Turkish parliament yesterday as a key extreme right wing party withdrew support for him.

"We no longer support the government as it has failed to meet our demands," the deputy leader of the Grand Union Party, Mr Mehmet Ekici, said after a party meeting.

Mr Ekici said Grand Union had rejected Mr Erbakan's proposal to join the government and support early elections in the autumn.
