Praia - Cape Verde islanders returned to the polls in low numbers yesterday, voting for a new president just four weeks after the former Marxist opposition won a majority of 40 seats in the 72member national assembly.

Polling stations reported a low turnout across the Atlantic Ocean archipelago. Four candidates are standing in the election to replace President Antonio Masacarenhas Monteiro in the former Portuguese colony.
