TWO MEN have been arrested in connection with the shooting of two security guards at a Dublin hospital earlier this month.

The men were arrested in Dublin 8 at 7.30am yesterday morning. Gardaí said both suspects were in their 20s.

The double shooting took place in the grounds of St James’s Hospital in the south-inner city at about 4.30am on August 4th.

The guards, both foreign nationals in their 20s, were carrying out a foot patrol of the hospital campus near the Rialto exit when they were sprayed with pellets, which gardaí believe probably came from a shotgun. One of the security guards suffered a shoulder wound during the attack while the other was shot in the arm.

Their wounds were not life threatening.

Investigators initially believed the shooting could be related to an earlier incident in the hospital’s accident and emergency department after which gardaí were called, a man was arrested and some others were ejected from the premises.

The men are being detained in Kilmainham and Kevin Street Garda stations under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be held for up to 72 hours.
