Kampala - Uganda's army said yesterday that it was starting to pull some of its troops out of the Democratic Republic of Congo in response to peace overtures made by Congolese President Joseph Kabila.

The withdrawal coincided with Rwanda's pull-out from the south-eastern Congolese town of Pweto. The two countries are backing rebels who are fighting to oust the Congolese government in Kinshasa and who now control roughly half of the country.
