American Power Conversions (APC) today announced plans to establish a research and development centre at its European headquarters in Galway.

The US communications software company already employs 800 at three locations in Mayo, Galway and Dublin.

The company is understood to be considering a €1 million investment in the new centre, which is also receiving backing from the IDA.

The Tánaiste, Ms Mary Harney, welcomed the news, saying the investment would "create highly skilled jobs in Ireland".

Ms Harney said: "The decision to locate the centre here was strongly influenced by the successful role played by APC's existing Irish operations in its global business."
