London - The former Conservative MP and junior minister, Ms Edwina Currie, won a libel case against the Daily Express for a story which branded her "the vilest lady in Britain". The newspaper was made to pay damages and apologise for the article in September 1997, which also reported rumours that Ms Currie wanted to defect to the Labour Party to breathe new life into her "clapped-out" political career. Ms Currie would not confirm rumours that the payment was £50,000.
