Gardaí in Limerick have warned of a "new and volatile" feud that has emerged on the southside of the city and has been linked to at least 10 shooting incidents in the past month.

The evidence was heard at Limerick District Court yesterday where a 28-year-old man was charged in connection with a recent ammunition seizure in the Southill area.

Patrick Casey, Clonlong, Southill, Limerick, is charged with having six rounds of 9mm ammunition in his possession for an unlawful purpose on August 5th last.

Garda Paraic O'Dwyer alleged in court yesterday that the 28-year-old was caught with a container of ammunition in his hand and for this reason the garda objected to bail.

The witness claimed that Mr Casey was involved in a new feud in the Southill area of Limerick, which has resulted in at least 10 shootings over the past few weeks.

Garda O'Dwyer told the court that three young men had been injured in these shootings and claimed that the accused would continue to involve himself in the feud if he was granted bail.

Defence solicitor Eileen Whelan told the court that her client, who is married with three children, had no previous convictions for feud-related offences and said he denies being involved in any dispute.

Garda O'Dwyer told the court that this feud had only emerged over the past month.

He claimed it was "very volatile at the moment" and would only escalate if Mr Casey was released from custody.

Judge Leo Malone refused bail and remanded him in custody until August 22nd next.
