Heavy rainfall over the weekend which led to severe flooding in parts of the country caused dangerous driving conditions and delays yesterday on some of Ireland's busiest roads.
Motorists were warned of flash flooding and slippery road conditions as continuous rainfall led to bad floods in south Ulster and north Leinster.
Antrim and Wexford in particular were severely affected by flooding, with up to 20mm (0.8 inches) of rainfall recorded. Drivers in eastern and southern parts of Ireland were advised to be extra vigilant due to surface water on roads and poor visibility.
Flash flooding caused severe traffic delays yesterday as the N2 Finglas Road, and parts of the M50 were said to be extremely slippery, causing heavy traffic congestion. Secondary roads in Wexford and Kilkenny were closed until yesterday afternoon. Dublin airport flights were delayed for several hours due to weather conditions yesterday morning.
Following one of the wettest summers in Ireland on record, a spokesman for Met Éireann said recent downpours brought the highest levels of rainfall to be recorded since the end of March.
However, beyond Wednesday, the outlook for the remainder of the week is mostly dry and settled weather as high pressure builds over the country.
