Garda in Galway are treating the death of an elderly Connemara woman as "suspicious", following the discovery of her body by a relative. Results of a preliminary post-mortem are expected today.
The body of the 88-year-old widow, named locally as Delia Folan, was found by her grandson at 10.30 p.m. on Thursday in a bedroom of her house at Baile an tSleibhe in Rossaveal Lower, Co Galway.
The widow had last been seen by close relatives shortly after lunchtime on Thursday, close to her home. Supt Mick Curley of Salthill, who is leading the investigation, said there were no signs of a break-in, but the scene still had to be examined thoroughly.
The bungalow was sealed off as the Garda from Salthill station awaited a technical team from Dublin and the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison. Severe weather hampered travel to the area, and the Garda technical team arrived by train.
