Food safety experts investigating the recent outbreak of E. coli food poisoning in a Dublin restaurant are examining the possibility that a contaminated food worker may have been the source.
It comes as the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a warning to food outlets that E. coli poisoning is potentially fatal, and urged "rigid" adherence to food hygiene practices.
Last week, O'Connell's restaurant in Bewley's Hotel, Ballsbridge, shut temporarily after it emerged that at least five customers may have contracted food poisoning from the E. coli 0157 bug.
While the investigation itself has not confirmed the source of the food poisoning, investigators are focusing on a worker in the restaurant who may have been carrying the E. coli bug.
To date, the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) has confirmed five cases of E. coli poisoning among people who ate at the restaurant since July 22nd.
Yesterday the ERHA reissued a public notice advising patrons who dined at the restaurant between July 22nd and August 27th to call a special helpline: 1800 383800.
The restaurant was particularly busy during the Dublin Horse Show.
"There needs to be extra vigilance in ensuring that all food workers wash their hands after using the bathroom and before handling foods, and in ensuring that food safety systems are able to cope despite warm weather conditions or busy periods," the ERHA said.
