Here in the countryside in Mayo, the casual destruction of trees and hedgerows is the rule. And it is abetted by council planning regulations which require new builds in the countryside to retreat circa four metres from the original boundary.
Nobody ever replaces the original boundary hedges – everybody prefers a lifeless wall or a fence.
Councils planning authorities should require replacement of like with like.
