Madam, - The Irish Times recently reviewed the excellent book on punctuation use and misuse, Eats, Shoots & Leaves (January 31st). Would it be possible for your reviewer to pass his copy of the book to the department in Dublin City Council responsible for traffic signs?
The book will clearly explain why two new signs on Pearse Street, barring traffic "except buses, taxi's, cycles, motorcycles" from entering College Green, give rise to feelings of violence in a punctuation stickler. Perhaps the constant stream of cars ignoring the new regulation are merely punctuation aficionados, making a stand against this blatant abuse of the apostrophe? - Yours, etc.,
GARRATH PATTERSON, Achill Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9.
