Madam, - When Stephen Dedalus - James Joyce - looked over the parapet of the Martello tower at Sandycove towards the "mailboat clearing the harbourmouth of Kingstown" (now Dún Laoghaire) on June 16th, 1904 the sight he beheld was much the same as he would see if he were on that parapet today.
If Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council were to have their way our new Dedalus would be looking at an enormous retail warehouse-style development of apartments and shops rising to the height of the town's twin spires and reaching over 200 metres into Scotsman's Bay, obliterating the view and mangling the entire sea front of the town.
Can we really have become so crass and indolent that we will allow this sacrilege? - Yours, etc,
ANGIE CODY,
Eden Road,
Dún Laoghaire.
