Sir, – Grainne Faller (“How qualified is your lecturer?”, Education Today, March 6th), has given us a clear picture of where third-level institutes interested in achieving university status stand in regard to the required staff qualifications.
John Mc Carthy (March 12th), states that the question is not how well qualified lecturers are, but how well they can teach. The questions of qualification and teaching are not mutually exclusive. Both questions are valid. Ms Faller is to be commended for moving the debate on university status to the level of serious academic issues rather than issues of geographical location and location in ministerial constituencies which have featured prominently in discussion of this question to date. – Yours, etc,
